The Butterfly

The child in the sculpture is locked away, abandoned behind a large thick door. The door is a replica of the crematorium doors at Auschwitz. The child is in a fetal position, on one hand dying but on the other hand being born. The left arm of the child, in a spiritual sense is penetrating the door and clutching a small parcel of land just outside the door. This parcel represents the land of Israel. The hand is going into the ground taking hold of it, and becoming a part of it. On the surface of the ground are olive leaves. Olive leaves reflect the natural connection to the land of Israel but also the oil of the olive is used for healing and anointing, two elements needed for the nation.
